The Complexity of Simplicity: I
Diving into this project has excited a creative part of my inner self that I’ve never seen before. The excitement comes from seeing my work take on a defined narrative which has never happened up until this point. I can see a direction in the work, a path in which I can express myself and truly say something. Simply put, I'm excited about becoming an artist. As an aspiring artist growing up in the high desert of Nevada it was the subtle things about the culture and land that shaped me. Focusing primarily on landscape photography in northern Nevada I learned to appreciate vast open landscapes and their simplicity. As I moved away from solely shooting landscapes the appreciation for simplicity never faded. Thinking about it now it wasn't just the simplicity I was trying to capture it was the underlying complexity to it all and the balance between them.
"Static on the T.V."
If there's one thing that I'm trying to accomplish with this project it would be for the viewer to reflect on one's own life and the balance of simple and complex that makes up daily life. I believe this will be best represented though semi-abstract two dimensional feeling images. The objects in focus are seemingly simple on the surface but take a closer look and you realize how complex they are and the integral role they play in everyday life. The compression of space and the exclusion of surrounding areas boils down the composition to just basic design elements and principles which provokes a sense of curiosity, a desire to know more and take a deeper look at the work.
